Secara klinis, penyakit polio menyerang anak di bawah umur 15 tahun yang menderita lumpuh layu akut. Penyebaran penyakit ini melalui kotoran manusia (tinja) yang terkontaminasi. Adapun gejala penyakit dimulai dengan demam, nyeri otot, dan kelumpuhan pada minggu pertama sakit.
